A musical fountain has no dependable price per square metre. Set a complete project budget by defining the water effects, site works, controls, delivery and operating responsibilities, then compare suppliers against the same scope.
What does a musical fountain budget include?
A quotation for pumps and nozzles is not a complete installed-project budget. Before comparing prices, draw a boundary around the work each supplier is responsible for. A package using an existing basin cannot be compared directly with a new plaza requiring excavation and underground construction.
| Category | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Design | Survey inputs, concept development, hydraulic and electrical coordination, drawings and approval stages. |
| Fountain equipment | Jet types and quantities, pumps, pipework, valves, lights, cabinets and treatment equipment. |
| Show production | Music rights, choreography, control integration, audio, projection and the number of deliverable programmes. |
| Site construction | Basin or deck, waterproofing, drainage, equipment space, utilities and access works. |
| Delivery and handover | Freight, duties, local handling, installation, travel, commissioning, training and spare parts. |
Why can two similar-sized fountains have different prices?
Start with the effects schedule rather than the footprint. More independently controlled effects, demanding jet heights and multimedia interfaces can change equipment and integration requirements. Site constraints matter too: crane access, long service routes, limited equipment space or work around an occupied destination can alter the installation scope.
Ask for a numbered equipment schedule and mark each item as included, excluded or provisional. An exclusion is not necessarily a problem; an unidentified owner for that exclusion is.
How do you estimate annual running costs?
Separate electricity from water, treatment, labour, consumables and repairs. Use estimated operating input for each mode, not simply the sum of motor nameplates. A show mode, quiet daytime mode and filtration-only mode may run for different hours.
Annual electricity cost = sum of (average input kW × annual operating hours × local price per kWh)
Illustrative calculation, not a specification or quotation: an assumed average input of 12 kW for 4 hours a day over 300 days uses 14,400 kWh. At an assumed tariff of USD 0.15/kWh, that mode costs USD 2,160 per year. Filtration outside those hours, demand charges and other costs are not included. Replace every assumption with the actual operating schedule and tariff.
A practical quotation comparison method
- Issue one project brief to every bidder.
- Compare the same effects, quantities, programme deliverables and acceptance tests.
- Add separately priced exclusions to obtain a comparable installed scope.
- Record currency, taxes, freight terms, quotation validity and payment milestones.
- Request energy assumptions, maintenance access requirements and spare-part availability.
Keep a separate allowance for unresolved survey and construction items. Its size must reflect the actual uncertainty; a universal contingency percentage would be misleading.
What can you simplify before sacrificing reliability?
Review decorative complexity, the number of bespoke programmes and optional multimedia effects first. Define the minimum audience experience you need. Do not treat electrical protection, appropriate water management, safe access or commissioning as optional savings. If funds are limited, agree a smaller complete scope rather than leaving essential interfaces unassigned.
For an accurate project price, the remaining inputs are the site survey, approved effects schedule and responsibilities matrix. This guide does not present an invented standard price range as a Lishi quotation.
