Define the hydraulic duty before comparing pumps
A pump curve relates flow to the head produced by a pump. The operating duty point depends on both that curve and the characteristics of the connected system. For a fountain project, prepare the intended operating flow and head for each hydraulic group before comparing proposed models.
Start with the nozzle or effect requirements and the distribution layout. List which effects run together, how operating sequences change and whether there are separate circulation or treatment duties. A maximum-flow figure and a maximum-head figure do not describe the same operating point, so they should not be treated as a combined performance promise.
Organise the pump brief by operating group
| Project condition | Information to prepare | Proposal review |
|---|---|---|
| A steady water-effect group | Required effect, nozzle demand and the distribution route. | Compare the proposed operating point with the selected pump curve. |
| A changing musical sequence | Which groups operate together and how the sequence changes. | Confirm the proposed control method, operating range and interfaces with show control. |
| A remote plant area or long pipe route | Equipment levels, pipe route, fittings and available plant space. | Include system losses and installation constraints in the hydraulic review. |
| Separate display and circulation duties | Which functions must continue when the display is stopped. | Identify separate duties, operating schedules and maintenance responsibilities. |
Coordinate the installation and control interfaces
Record the proposed pump location, available access and relationship to the operating water level. Compare the permitted installation conditions in the selected model's documentation with the actual site arrangement. Include provision for inspection, isolation and removal in the plant layout rather than leaving those interfaces until construction.
Give the electrical and control team the available supply information and the intended operating sequence. Confirm compatibility between the proposed pump, motor control equipment and the project control scheme. Where a proposal includes adjustable operation, request the relevant operating information for that arrangement instead of assuming that all pumps behave in the same way.
Documents to request with the proposal
- The proposed model and its performance curve, with the intended operating point identified.
- Hydraulic grouping and the conditions used to prepare the pump schedule.
- Installation drawings, connection details and maintenance clearances.
- Electrical characteristics and the agreed control interfaces.
- Materials and water-condition requirements relevant to the project.
- Operation, inspection and replacement information for the handover package.
Agree commissioning and handover records
Use the project equipment schedule as the reference for commissioning. Record which hydraulic group is being tested, the operating settings used and the resulting water effect. Investigate differences with the nozzle, pipework and control arrangement together so that a component change is not used to mask a layout or interface issue.
Keep the approved pump schedule, drawings and operating settings with the handover records. Identify who is responsible for routine checks, servicing and access to the plant. For an overseas project, agree document language, packing information and support responsibilities as part of the supply scope.
Equipment planning questions
Can a pump be selected from electrical power alone?
Prepare the required flow and head and compare the proposed operating point with the pump curve. Electrical power is part of the equipment review, not a substitute for hydraulic duty information.
What if the site drawings are still being developed?
Send the current layout, effect brief and known installation constraints. Identify the assumptions that remain open so the pump schedule can be reviewed as the design develops.
Where should the complete fountain design be discussed?
Use the fountain design or musical fountain solution enquiry for the overall system. Include the pump brief within that project so that the equipment and site interfaces are reviewed together.
